Dissect Journal is an independent contemporary art publication founded in Melbourne (2013) by emerging arts writers and designers. Through Dissect, we aim to focus on the local significance and particularity of art and artists. We seek to analyse the work of contemporary artists from various vantage points, sculpting and refining multiple histories of contemporary art.
We turn to print, as we believe that no text or critical approach should stand alone as an artefact, isolated in its own singularity. The published medium reveals, in its physicality, images and text as immovably interdependent and provokes further discussion and debate over the nature of contemporary art and criticism. We also use Dissect as a vessel through which we can explore and extend the possibilities of writing, editing, design and publishing as artistic practice.
